Thread: WD NTFS External Drive Forces Files to be Executable
edit:
tried ntfs drive , noticed same problem described below, i'm pretty sure related default ntfs support in ubuntu , wondering if regarding that, since can't find lot ntfs in ubuntu appears recent.
every file/folder/etc on ntfs drive read ubuntu appears have full read/write/execute permissions owner, group, , others no ability change (not error message--rather, after making change appears revert).
real issue have executable bit part--files not , should not read executable are.
trying transfer files old computer new computer, , don't want wind files being executables. further, need using drive both windows , linux, means can't reformat ext4. prefer not use fat32 if @ possible, due limitations inherent in file system.
know if there default ntfs support in ubuntu (i can't find documentation on it, though might looking in wrong place) , if so, whether or not reparable issue. reference, both new , old computer having problem, both files on drive (ones trying read) , files created in ubuntu, , not appear have make/settings of external drive, contrary original suspicions.
thanks!

got new computer , purchased external drive, hopes in addition using external drive store more files copy files old laptop new 1 without incident.
drive (a western digital book) works fine in windows, , @ first appeared work fine both read , write access in ubuntu.
issue file, regardless of type or content , regardless of whether created on drive or copied over, forces have read permissions set 777 (read/write/execute privilege users).
avoid having format drive fat32 (as dislike said filesystem; prefer journaled system ext4 on drive since must communicate both linux , windows aware impossibility). else use or similar wd drive or have similar issue, , if so, know how resolve it?
thanks!
does have experience forced permissions on drive situation? i'm trying transfer new computer , concern if copy paste drive contents 1 external drive other, new computer won't able handle files due them being marked executable.
since need use both windows , linux , have 1 external drive, hoping able work under standard formatting, since have had success in past working ntfs partitions under linux. however, locked executable bit make impossible use or interact drive , contents under linux.
