Thread: Ubuntu not working - mount /dev on /root/dev failed : no such file or directory

ubuntu(10.04) working fine, program crashed or something, , switched off (power offed) computer (sorry, shouldn't have). when restarted it, sort of stuff comes:
code:
mount /dev on /root/dev failed : no such file or directory
and more lines that, , 'busybox' starts [intramfs].
booted ubuntu pen drive , ran fsck on main partition. pressed 'y' long time (it asks stuff should continue repairing or something), , done. restarted pc , booted - looked if fine.
started google chrome, , said couldn't find personal config file .. ok. tried opening folder - nothing happens. system monitor doesn't open, , windows open blank. restarted pc (this time doing normal restart), , gave me same 'busybox' thing.
did same procedure again, , got same results. (ubuntu boots, programs dont work, restart , busybox thing comes again)
why happening?
please help!!

1 more thing : ubuntu installed on hard disk had recent updates (including latest linux kernel) while pen drive thing around 2 months old think. maybe that's cause? i'm new ubuntu, dunno this.

hi,

newbie here having same problem above.

ran ubuntu 10.04 duel boot option alongside windows vista (bleuuurghhh) before deciding go 100% ubuntu week ago.

after installation cool, got duel monitor set working. got superb awn dock , running, popped few launchers onto it. spent hours importing business email etc etc thunderbird, created thunderbird profile manager thing can swap between several work/personal email accounts. did load of work , running fine.

before finishing day whipped sd card out of camera , popped in card reader check out vids , pics. vids wouldn't play (.mov) rather fart getting codes etc packed in night.

went bed happy , windows free man.

next day re-booted , mentioned op windows opened blank grey boxes... minimize , close buttons there nothing else.

apps (eg firefox, gimp) wouldn't launch.

so, moused top shut down or restart , got shown blank box too...

started bit pi$$ed off @ point.

ctrl alt del , dialog box opened options shut down etc selected.

re-booted , still crap , worse still nothing opening had press restart button on front of tower.

re-booted , black screen , bunch of text ending with:
mount: mounting/dev or /root/dev failed: no such file or directory

/sys on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory
/proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or directory

target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init

no init found try passing init: bootarg
my system quad core amd 500gb hd , 3gb ram (might 2, can't double check here)

op post i'm not alone problem, out there know what's happening?
