Thread: Problems with triple monitors with ATI Radeon HD 4550

i have ubuntu desktop x64 10.04 on dell optiplex 980. has 2 radeon hd 4550 cards: 1 of them has single dvi monitor connected, other has 2 connected (one displayport adapter). 3 monitors identical (dell 2007fps).

in windows 7 x64, can have 3 monitors working properly, including aero. in ubuntu, i'm having major problems. default installation, can 2 monitors (i.e., card 2 monitors connected) third in power save. compiz works using stock driver , system behaves normally. however, monitors preference window sees 2 monitors.

catalyst driver ati's site, 1 of several things happens:
  • if try aticonfig --initial -f, 3 monitors work @ login screen, , can log in. if move mouse edge of monitor, system locks (i.e., num lock won't work) , need reset it. fix delete /etc/x11/xorg.conf. hard locks after few seconds regardless of do, including failsafe gnome session.
  • with other configurations, , can't track down when, other card--the 1 1 monitor connected--works, , remaining 2 monitors show last on them, ubuntu bootup animation frozen. working display incredibly slow , not running compiz.
  • if start catalyst control center, sees 1 of cards. shows display "unknown adapter" , thinks can run @ 640x480, , enabling nothing. however, command-line tools recognize there 2 cards, lspci.

so, ideas? i'm willing sacrifice compiz , maybe allow 2 x servers if necessary, can't 3 monitors work.

no thoughts?
