Thread: Grub2 will not boot ubuntu, and stays at terminal
so i've installed ubuntu on laptop, using alternate cd installed encrypted copy. after installing nvidia drivers, plymouth splash screen's resolution (login splash) got screwed up, , tried fix (expected). splash screen screen enter encryption code encrypted ubuntu. after manually changing grub's boot resolution didn't work (text edit grub, , update-grub), tried startup manager change resolution. didn't work either. in fact neither of them work. changing settings in startup manager or text grub update takes no effect, though resolution chose supposedly supported weird bios video thing.
so, tried reinstall grub2.
followed following instructions:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1014708
when start computer, goes gnu grub v 1.98, following lines
"minimal bash-like line editing supported. first word, tab lists of possible command completions. anywhere else tab lists possible device or file completions.
grub> _"
, stays there. no menu, nothing.
assume due me installing encrypted copy, boot partition separate.
when run
sudo fdisk -l
there's 2 says linux, , 1 that's ext. 1 of linux ones smaller other.
guessed installed grub2 in wrong partition? cannot mount linux partition that's bigger. asks encryption password, says error: unmountable partition. i'm sure typed password correctly, because if type wrong, gives me different prompt , asks password again.
i'm not sure how grub2 attempt load encrypted partition either...
do? grub annoyingly frustrating work correctly.
(the exact error message is: unable mount 120 gb lvm2 physical volume)
(not mountable file system)
if type
sudo mount /dev/sda5 /media/sda5 (which encrypted partition) says
mount: unknown filesystem type 'crypto_luks'
i checked around , describe, "minimal bash-like line editing supported..." booting directly command line interface (cli.) here's information on commands available in cli mode.

on head offer more suggestions. can tell commands try. grub2 tricky, because transitioning configuration data storage different method. sounds part of grub2 installation process "chains" data 1 set of files another, or that.
