Should I use multiple catalogs?... And fastest preview method?

this first post , not find clear recommendations posted.  if here , recent, feel free point me them.  have tried lightroom 3 , aperture 3 side side.  started lightroom 2 , have decided upgrade version 3, have previews in aperture 3 faster render , sort.  shortcoming of lightroom or can recommend settings speed process?  perhaps next question has impact.

next question:  should keep multiple catalogs or use single catalog?  impact speed.  have 13,000 images in raw format being managed lightroom 3.  have landscape, sports, travel, sale items, family, , portraits.  problem multiple catalogs management.  suppose have travel photos include family.  have import photos 2 catalogs can find them.  see going.  going pro , want sorted out before deeper , photos reach 100,000 or more.  suspect run out of hard drive space coming year , start moving less-than-best photos remote storage.

your appreciated , thank adobe thought product.

roddy hogg.

edit->catalog settings->file handling lets set size of previews generated. it's tradeoff; higher quality previews take longer on import, less time scrolling through images.

one catalog need. people report catalogs of on 200k images running properly. splitting images multiple catalogs creates less functionality use, there no functions operate on multiple catalogs.
