Thread: How To Cache Directory And File Structure In Memory
hello everyone,
running ubuntu lucid x64 fileserver shares files via sftp, nfs , samba.
hard disks configured go standby if not needed. works long no 1 browses shares or htpc running: 1 repeatedly looks through shares new music or movies.
in other words problem disks spinning lot more should have to. additionally spin-up time delays response time while browsing.
since machine has lot of unused ram want tell kernel should keep directory structure in memory. way disks not need spin every time browses through directories.
there way achieve that?
lot!
i have no idea how achieve this... why not stop disks spinning down? there lots af arguments powersaving vs performance vs longevity, believe if leave drives spinning time, make them last longer if have spin , down difference in heat wear out faster! (i'm of opinion)
ou need take condideration power usage, why switching (as can afford to!!) either wd/samsung green drives 'intelliseek' business.
doesn't answer question... i'm not sure looking right soluton? have @ this thread regarding using usb boot powersaving
