my question simple, have amd64 (gigabyte board, 8 gigs ram) , have ubuntu x64 bit installed, running fine, until 3 or 4 weeks ago, in 1 of updates, boot time, went 20 or 30 seconds 10 minutes. it's system in "permanent" forced file-system checks every boot, i've since turned forced filesystem checks "sudo tune2fs -c 500 /dev/sda1" every 500th boot, appears still doing forced check every single boot, , thing makes me think that, when-ever system forced file-system check, ram loaded program cache, when booted. when typed "free" see 6.5 gigs free, after forced system file check, say, 6 gigs in use program cache. worked fine until update 3 or 4 weeks ago... 10 minutes of black screen, every single boot. thanks! posted chinasailor my question simple, have amd64 (gigabyte board, 8 gigs ram) , have ubuntu x64 bit install

i tried install ubuntu next xp. after restart - no xp , no ubuntu. wrong loader guess, see command line prompt (of loader guess). restarted livecd. no "repair install" option in xp cd. so, deleted partition install again on top of old, learned loader possibly fixed. so, problem is: testdisk cannot restore partition deleted . didn't write on disk anything. may swap space after couple reloads livecd corrupted it? complains "the harddisk (...) seems small!", sees other partitions , doesn't see gparted , disk utility. please, let me know best approach xp running (having ubuntu too). here below screen captures details. deleted partition shown in disk utility ...in gparted testdisk warning hidden sectors. ok? quich search results. can't recover what's found. why 4 partitions found? notice, "the harddisk seems small !" problem? hdd not maxtor anymore the gap there no deleted parti
