InDesign CS5 spinning beachball

i working on book document of twenty chapters , 100 pages. when i'm working on every time try anything, beach ball of doom appears , slowing me down real crawl. feels if it's memory issue that's guess.

 

new files aren't problem, happens when work on larger file.

 

any suggestions? it's driving me mad!

do files contain cross-references other files?

 

i've had when trying cross-references automatically updating table of contents, book of approx. 60 separate files. live, learn -- learned never that again.

cf_sql_integer vs cf_sql_bigint vs cf_sql_int??
