Thread: installation of tar.gz and tar.bz2 files

hiya... let me explain problem...

accidentally removed network manager (gnome) system (via synaptic) , hence have not been able have access internet reinstall packages. have experimented many commands (with others) in terminal little success.

did downloaded 'networkmanager-0.8.0.999.tar.gz' file , 'networkmanager-0.8.1.tar.bz2' file (from different comp) , have placed them onto desktop. have read install instructions within , tad complex me new linux.
understand have extract files , compile them new folder (i think choose file in /home directory)- how go doing this?
following this, need './configure' or 'make' or 'make install' files - ...

basically, need here. if seem little bit of novice ****- apologize true!

appreciation round reading , helping!!!

problem if had not installed "build essentials" synaptic can't compile , build work, that's load more software try , shoe-horn in.

newbs , experienced alike, when in mess it's easier reinstall ubuntu cd , start again.

interested in 0.8.1 installed version 0.8 there again new version may not work on 10.04 anyway there's risk factor in going way suggest.
