Thread: Toshiba Portege R700 / R705 Linux Hardware Compatibility Thread
ive purchased number of newly released toshiba portege r700-15u business laptops. there (and still is) little linux related support information available due being new model have started document hardware compatibility under ubunutu 10.04. not intended review or discussion of laptop features, collation of compatibility info , fixes laptop under linux owners or looking to buy one.
r705 shares same components r700. lacks number of features (bluetooth? fingerprint reader, express slot?, 5400rpm drive?) present on r700 there no reason why cant tracked here also.
feel free post updates , keep chart fresh.
test os: ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx amd64. alternate installer, encrypted lvm setup. apart standard install.
test firmware: initial release firmware
legend:
works (maybe patch or fix)
number of small bugs present,
could potential deal breaker moving windows ubuntu
webcam
- hardware detected
- works in chesse & skype.
- can adjust resolution/brightness/settings correctly.
suspend ram / suspend disk
- the laptop goes in , out of sleep/hibernate cleanly.
- wifi/lan comes automatically on resume.
- fixed in 2.6.35
if have sd card mounted in slot laptop not suspend disk or ram.. screen blanks out fan running , requires hard reset back.
- fixed enough (see acpi script in thread)
brightness locked after resume. brightness indicator moves , down when changed, doesn't affect display levels.
- fixed:
even when set suspend ram on idle r700 hibernating
multi card reader
- tested ok sd & sdhc card.
- not ubuntu specific issue, cant boot sd card
express slot
- shows in lspci , supported under linux
- untested @ moment
fingerprint reader
- shows in lspci, isn't detected pam_fprint_enroll or fprint_demo.
- no os drivers exist device
wifi / bluetooth
- intel wifi works 100%
- full wep/wpa/wpa2 support
- wifi wont turn off/on via keyboard hotkey
- wifi status led not turn off card manually disabled
- bluetooth works, pairs, transfers files, connects bluteooth hid device
- even when disabled, bluetooth seems renable after reboot or resume suspend... still chasing up. suspect still drawing power when disabled
hard drive
- hard drive accelerometer/impact sensor/protection system not supported hdapsd.
touchpad
- generally works well.
- two finger scrolling greyed out via ubuntu mouse settings can turned on running few synclient settings on login x (i run them automatically on startup)
code:#!/bin/bash sleep 10 synclient verttwofingerscroll=1 synclient horiztwofingerscroll=1 synclient emulatetwofingerminw=5 synclient emulatetwofingerminz=48
- touchpad disable button (both keyboard shortcut & dedicated button) not function
- touchpad automatically disables when typing , required no setup
keyboard
- 2 dedicated hardware buttons (email & web in windows think) can assigned function via keyboard shortcuts... both appear same button "mod4+x"
- f1-f12 default action, fn being secondary
- display switch hotkey works
- most fn modifiers work fine. can vol+ & vol-, mute, suspend, numberpad etc
- touchpad & display switch fn modifiers dont function, , not programmable. triggering them not register type of keypress. suspect these hardware set , never accessible.
- wifi hotkey turns bluetooth module on , off. fixed acpi scripting if needed
sleep&charge
- when enabled in bois esata/usb port charge when laptop not on. works fine in ubunutu , laptop not woken up.
nic
- throughput in line 1gb port
- when using toshset tool disable nic cant re-enabled without going bios
display
- fixed enough (see acpi script in thread)
display brightness cannot changed after laptop has resumed suspend disk or ram.
video
- intel video card supported.
- compiz on default , desktop effects work great
- full sd (720p) playback works 100%
- vga & hdmi outputs recognized
- vga & hdmi outputs can configured secondary or mirrored devices , detect/display correctly.
- have had plugged both tv , lcd monitor , works flawlessly.
- after removing hdmi cable laptop display goes full brightness , cant lowered if have resumed suspend!
battery
- ubuntu misreports battery capacity , charge levels.
- after week of testing battery level predictions still poor, despite error correction being performed
- "ubuntu power statistics" (accessible battery icon) gives average of 25% prediction accuracy both charge , discharge cycles. less ideal
- full charge predicts 3½ - 4hr battery life... when laptop gets 5mins remaining can still last 1hr.
- battery reports after week of use capable of 90% original capacity. suspect incorrect too.
- despite these issues, battery still gives 3½-4½ hours of use, difficult predict when run out or when charged.
audio
- sound playback through speakers works clean install of lucid (works in maverick atm)
- hdmi audio output works. can switched on , off via volume panel settings
- headphone & mic jack not function
- inbuilt mic muted default, works fine when unmuted via
- fixed in 10.10 (2.6.35 kernel)
i built alsa source fixed headphone & mic jack issue, after kernel update broke again. running script again fixed issue again

i read post on notebookreview.com, starting thread.
i've been waiting hands on r700-15q weeks toshiba (understandably) feeding market higher spec'd models first.
given importance of toshiba's "eco mode" regulating temp/fans/noise/power consumption in windows, how r700 score on these points under ubuntu?
toshset project deprecated or still of use on r700?
re bios: can't find release notes b1.30-ec1.30-win it's impossible know what's been tweaked. i'm bit disappointed bios updates coming windows executables only.
