Setting up RAID 0 and scratch disk from blank drives?

folks,

 

howdy again nc. i've been setting amd phenom ii 955 handle ppro cs5 possible, within limits. built 4 of these machines math class, , going give cs5 go on 1 of them before caving in , migrating production premium i7/x58 platform. maybe i'll lucky , find computer works acceptably ppro, if transcode t2i avchd footage (likely neoscene).

 

i put 3 new disks build yesterday , pointers on setting them up, if may ask. have read through number of posts on this, don't find direct answers, unfortunately. i've never set raid , want right.

 

i have 2 caviar black drives raid , hitachi deskstar scratch disk. blacks new out of pack , hitachi has had zeros written drive. how begin?

 

anticipated issues:

 

* need format drives in way? had planned on going disk management , setting volume on each first move. right now, aren't recognized under my computer. under disk management, 3 show unallocated.

 

from memory, right click in unallocated space , select option setting volume. prior used straight-up drives, no raid, , after writing zeros drive selected "new simple volume". seems me move make on single scratch disk.

 

but how 2 raided drives? have options set "new striped volume" or "new spanned volume". if answer set as "new striped volume" raid 0 have planned, do before or after installing raid software?

 

 

* documentation setting raid on motherboard doesn't indicate when to change bios setting 2 sata channels ide raid. should before or after running software set raid? need go software setup 2 sata channels configured raid?

 

right now, sata channels configured ide.

 

 

* after getting disks set up, i'd optimize system editing (turning off unwanted features, etc.). i've been looking on link outside site had bookmarked prior post, lost on re-install. recall favored link was? started long page of instructions in simple typeface.

 

 

in end, disks follows (unless makes case use them differently):

 

os/programs - 1tb caviar green. yes, know deal on green drives, needed use drive somewhere. figured using os drive best spot slowest drive. maybe botched , should have used following drive os? had transfer rates in mind , thought scratch drive should faster?

 

scratch - 750gb deskstar 7k100 series. drive tops 18 months when bought it.

 

raid 0 - 2 640gb caviar blacks (32 meg cache, twin processors). bit older in black lineup, drive charts show them working quickly.

 

to ask 1 dumb last question, show newbieness, use scratch drive page files (right? , else?) , raid holding media worked upon , encoding final project?

 

i've been reading on forum on month , amazed have drives raid, can't find links tell me do. know asking redundant questions here have spent 2 hours search engine , getting tangential anwers (ha! math joke).

 

sorry asking such newbie questions on again, luck search engine hasn't been of late. maybe bill's idea of creating sticky section common questions idea.

let's summarize: have 4 disks, 1 os, 1 htachi , 2 wd caviar blacks. want raid last 2 in raid0.

 

bad news: wd caviar black not advised in raid configuration because of wdtler 'utility'.

 

solution: use them 4 separate disks, not raided. here: adobe forums: generic guideline disk setup

 

you have format each basic disk primary partition disk management.
