Database Experts Opinions please. - Joomla! Forum - community, help and support

okay, @ work i'm having big disagreement project management team has no database experience @ all. here issue.

we have 10 product lines, in each product line there number of attribute names, such height, weight, color, price , on. have total of 670 attribute names 10 product lines. project management team wanting create master file in excel contains 670 attribute names, regardless if attribute name pertains product line or not. let's 'widget a' has 70 attribute names, want still add other 600 attribute names , enter dash value (you can import if value has character in field). have import each product line one-by-one since software requires.

to me, not proper way build database since creating database have hundreds of thousands of null characters. normalizing databse, , told them complete opposite of normalizing database.

i forward opinions well.

i'm not sure how pertains joomla installation (where post appearing) here's opinion.

if product 1 has 1 attribute want 669 blank attributes associated product 1?

same goes product 2 25 attributes leaving 645 blank fields.

seems huge waste of db space , representative of flat database (non-efficient) , not relational database. think amazon operates using excel? think not.

excel easier setup , use can maintenance nightmare. efficient way put data relational database (such access) , use db's features , powers make data work minimal "bloating".
