Thread: Nvidia Graphics card driver help
i installed ubuntu 8.04 yesterday , while have used few times in past on dual boot system i'm not experienced linux.
i'm running athlon xp 2600+ 2 gb of ram , newly installed nvidia geforce 9400 gt pci card (regular pci not pci-e) 1gb vram. when installed ubuntu didnt detect card started looking through various forums , websites figure out how installed.
spent day yesterday frustrated , trying card installed , still havent gotten anywhere. before asks, yes bios set pci , not agp card.
system hardware driver list says "no proprietary drivers in use on system"
heres rundown of did.
-downloaded nvidia driver nvidia site, driver card "nvidia-linux-x86-256.44.run"
-purged nvidia drivers may loaded on system command sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-*
-installed driver console , got "error: unable load kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. happens most
when kernel module built against wrong or

-reboot , message age asking if want configure driver , box says "you running in low graphics mode" , option configure video card.
when hit configure shows current driver , can select specific card list, if go down list highest cards listed geforce 8 series. if select use current driver , hit test screen goes black , have giant square mouse cursor.
have nvidia xserver setting listed under preferences when open "you not appear using nvidia x driver. please edit x configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` root), , restart x server." restarted x , went nvidia settings , gives me same error message.
thats i'm @ now. how card working ? have never had many issues trying install video card. tried doing upgrade ubuntu 10.04 , still had same problem.

basic question @ first. why did install 8.04? special reason behind it? 10.04 out , lts release. why don't give 10.04 try?
