Thread: How to track data rate/use?

i'm sure simple haven't clue how other system monitor, displays total uptime.

want see total network data use in bytes (gb, mb, or kb) downloaded/uploaded for month or given date range.

rationale want use wireless tethering phone replace broadband connection @ home. @ moment phone contract gives me unlimited data access, if sign new contract today drop 2 gb month hefty overage charges.

need realistic idea of actual home usage before committing anything.

hey found simple program called vnstat. sort-of works. can averages etc. i'm having problem:

code:
radtek@tosh:~$ vnstat eth0: not enough data available yet. or radtek@tosh:~$ vnstat -h eth0: not enough data available yet.
it's supposed write log "eth0" in /var/lib/vnstat? can't read one.

there other similar programs out there work well?
