Thread: Thinkpad USB boot problem
i have thinkpad x40 (no optical drive) bought on ebay. came preinstalled w/ windows xp , works fine. having trouble getting boot off usb stick.
tried both universal usb installer , unetbootin install ubuntu isos. boot live disc fine on pc in signature. when boot on thinkpad, says boot error. tried both sandisk 8gb & corsair 32gb usb sticks. thinkpad has 2 usb 2.0, work otherwise.
have set boot first usb-hdd, have tried using os menu select after going bios. trying avoid having buy usb cd-rom if possible.

ok,
went , asked thinkpad forum, http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=89692 , , checked see if laptop had bios updates. updated laptop bios 1.22 bios 2.08.
bios update not needed, said booting usb using bios 1.22. able keep testing different options , found able boot using puppy linux on 3rd 256mb flash drive. (since requires 128mb)
have purchase 4th flash drive , hope works ubuntu.
update: new flash drive worked, able load xubuntu 9.04 (updated 9.10) since 10.04 boots black screen. , alternate install cd not work usb flash drive.
