Thread: ubuntu 10.04 starts in tty1 console; GUI does not load/start


hello,

i've come across very strange issue ubuntu today. when start machine starts in tty1 console , not load/start gui

have tried following nothing seems have worked.
1) used alt + ctrl + 7 : shows blank (black) screen no change long time.
2) startx : started in recovery mode go root prompt , entered startx aborts command
3) sudo service gdm start: shows pid of service not start gui.


running 1 problem in linux. frankly has been bit overwhelming spend more time fixing system working on it. common experience or machine? thing keeps me going , keeps me hooked linux forum support. on forum helpful. love open source community , want here forever reaping benefits , helping others!

update!
when run startx command, get
x: /tmp/.x11-unix has suspicious mode (not 1777) or not directory, aborting, giving up
xinit: no such file or directory (error 2): unable connect x server
xinit: no such process (error 3): server error


by giving command: sudo service gdm start, get
gdm start/running, process 1047
