does rub wrong way? being avid google user it's i've learned live with, necessary canonicle include data tracking package default?just uploaded ubuntu lucid repository ubuntu 10.04 lts (and imagine appear shortly in maverick ubuntu 10.10) new package called canonical-census, marks initial release. curious package provides, did digging , found it's tracking ubuntu installations sending "i alive" ping canonical on daily basis...the program added daily cron jobs executed each day report canonical on http number of times system sent canonical (this counter stored locally , running on daily basis it's thereby indicating how many days ubuntu installation has been active), ubuntu distributor channel, product name acquired system's dmi information, , ubuntu release being used. that's canonical-census does, @ least now. there haven't been such ubuntu tracking measures attempted canonical.
edit:
should have mentioned this.
my thoughts are,the news concerned privacy appears canonical interested in tracking users of oem installations -- pcs ship ubuntu default such zareason, system76, , dell. information valuable both companies see whether customers keeping around ubuntu installations or wiping them , how ubuntu being used on these systems (judging number of times system reported canonical's server previously).
if uninstalled canonical-census, no way sure they'd fudging numbers regardless. uninstalling ubuntu doesn't mean installing windows, might mean starting on fresh ubuntu install won't include canonical-census. stupid idea.
keeping track of ip addresses? if installs bunch of ubuntu partitions on 1 machine canonical-census installed? fool canonical thinking market-share rising rapidly. it's seems flawed idea me.
as long they're front , give user option enable or disable it, i'm fine it. i'd disable on system, software calls home should have permission user before doing -- else it's considered malware in book. , if canonical makes habit of including such software without telling users, it'll turn users away.
