Post Staging Event Comments/Observations

i got atlanta yesterday after week @ fountainebleau hotel in miami florida.  owner of company work for, designed staging environment based on ballroom space available , budget of course.  ballroom has low ceilings went rows of 4 projection screens side side accomodate around 2300 people. our client sold on video elements moving freely across 4 screens.  presents video editing challenge.  fortunately cs5 arrived on time prepare videos show.  couldn't have cs4.  designed , tested workflow got job done ahead of event .  process though!  here suggestions , observations professionals type of thing regularly:

 

observations:

we had great camera man on trip used panasonic hvx200p  , canon 7d.  uses mac , final cut pro guy.  gave me folder full of around 70 p2 files imported premiere cs5 bin.  stood in disbelief watching how fast these files became ready edit compared high-end mac using final cut pro.

 

animations span 4 screens shot on canon 7d camera.  jpegs brought after effects beautiful timelapse sequences created.  1 of issues ran is, mac guys providing me quicktime animation codec 3840 x 540 video timelapses.  quicktime animation codec video performs miserably in premiere cs5 @ dimension.  add that, these clips had effects added them , sped around 500%.  uncompressed avi's work better on timeline.  better yet cineform encoded files.  unfortunately product cineform makes encodes video @ size cost $1000.

 

adobe , nvidia did remarkable job mercury playback engine.  still needs work though.  found mpe hardware acceleration enabled, cross dissolves don't work under circumstances.  across four-screen editing mode instance, have 3 cross dissolves working 1 jumping semi-transparent opaque.  go in , turn mercury hardware acceleration off software only, , cross dissolves return normal.

 

recommendation:

don't use aiff audio files in premiere cs5 project.  audio edits end way out of sync when reopen project.  don't know if holds true premiere cs5 on mac or not.  though told mac guys not put these type of files in premiere cs5 project, did anyway.  had use dynamic linked soundbooth save wav's , doing replace footage command corrected out of sync audio edit issue.

 

the staging technician used not grass valley turbo 2 used show.  told me, in experience dating model before turbo 2, every time rented earlier model in past, encountered hardware failure.  uses 2 units, 1 backup of course.  time turbo 2, 1 of 2 units arrived hardware issue , needed replacement overnighted.  if purchase turbo 2, ships edius, former canopus product.  in opinion "fringe" editing software not attractive enough final cut users or premiere pro cs5 users switch to.  issue is, turbo 2 takes natively without transcoding, canopus hq encoded files.  there no plugin premiere cs5 , canopus hq files not play premiere cs5 timeline, play premiere cs4 timeline.

 

in opinion, grass valley needs come streamlined workflow people other edius , procoder 3 owners/editors.

 

these hoops had jump through in order video file ready staging technician:

 

export timeline uncompressed avi using uyvy codec.  initially, getting audio out of procoder 3 when encoding v210 codec.  exporting 2 minute video took around 16 minutes.  next drag file procoder 3 , export in canopus hq codec.  have tweak settings, think ridiculous.  think,  if grass valley wants people use turbo 2, there should turbo 2 preset ready go.  transcoding hq codec takes around 8 minutes.  next have copy file flash drive.  takes around 7 minutes.  need copy file grass valley turbo takes around 15 minutes each (2 minute video) primary , backup units.

 

i have had privilege of working fortune 500 company since 2003 has never had loss year since great depression of 1930's.  in worst of times, when many businesses losing money, riding people because aren't making enough of profit. in process of producing training videos , live presentations, have learned great deal how run successful business.  on years,  have seen many companies in video software business otherwise have decent product making incredibly stupid decisions have huge negative impact on bottom line seem unaware of.  i'm not referring adobe way.  have stepped plate phenomenal release of cs5.  has opened new creative possibilities.

i getting audio out of procoder 3 when encoding v210 codec.

 

that may not surprise.  v210 codec use in conjunction aja hardware.  if don't have hardware...
