the repositories have gotten better on years, still you'll run across odd piece have install via compiling. used gentoo , liked way install software- it's compiling. so, why not write piece of software that's gui tool compiling , installing programs? start program, specify directory of package, set compiling options (something gentoo-like, e.g. not having kde support if don't use it), choose user or root install. decompresses archive, puts shell script compilation (is word?) in new directory , executes it. think idea, or has been done? if so, shouldn't in default install?
sounds want ide... there plenty of those.
or misunderstanding something?
